What it is

Zcash is a cryptocurrency that launched in October 2016 with a fixed limit of 21 million coins, the same as Bitcoin. Its key feature is optional privacy. Users can send coins from a shielded address, where advanced cryptography called zero-knowledge proofs confirms that a payment is valid without revealing the sender, receiver or amount. Users can also use transparent addresses that work much like Bitcoin's.

For years most ZEC sat in transparent addresses, which weakened the privacy story. That has changed. By April 2026 nearly 30% of circulating ZEC was held in shielded pools, the highest share on record, helped by wallets that shield funds by default. ZEC also had a large price run in late 2025 as privacy coins came back into focus, and Grayscale converted its Zcash trust into an exchange-traded fund that began trading in the U.S. in August 2026.

Development has been led for years by the Electric Coin Company, overseen by a nonprofit called Bootstrap, alongside the separate Zcash Foundation. In January 2026 the entire Electric Coin Company team left after a dispute with the Bootstrap board and said it would form a new company. The network itself kept running normally, but the split raised questions about who leads future work.

What can go wrong

Bachi waving

If privacy is why you are interested, use a wallet that keeps funds shielded by default; coins left on an exchange or in transparent addresses get none of that benefit.
