What it is
Uniswap is the largest decentralized exchange on Ethereum. Instead of matching buyers with sellers through an order book, it uses liquidity pools: people deposit pairs of tokens into a smart contract, and traders swap against that pool at a price set by a formula. The depositors, called liquidity providers, earn a cut of each trade. Uniswap now runs on Ethereum and many other networks, including its own chain, Unichain.
UNI is the governance token. Holders vote on how the protocol and its treasury are run. For most of its life UNI gave holders votes but no share of trading fees, which led many critics to call it a token with no cash flow behind it.
That changed in December 2025, when holders approved a plan called "UNIfication." It turned on a protocol fee that takes a slice of trading fees on selected pools and uses it to buy and burn UNI, routed Unichain's net fees to the same burn, removed fees on Uniswap Labs' own app, and folded the Uniswap Foundation's work into Uniswap Labs. As part of the deal, 100 million UNI were burned from the treasury on December 28, 2025. UNI started with a supply of 1 billion tokens; governance can also mint a small amount of new UNI each year.
What can go wrong
- The fee switch takes part of what liquidity providers used to earn; if providers move their money to rival exchanges with better terms, trading volume and therefore burns could shrink.
- Uniswap Labs, the company that builds the protocol, gained more control under the 2025 changes, which concentrates decision-making in one firm.
- Voting power is concentrated in large holders and delegates, so a small group can carry proposals that shape supply and fees.
- Burns depend on trading volume, which drops in quiet markets; the token's value story now rests on activity that can fall quickly.

Using the Uniswap app and owning UNI are different things. You can trade on Uniswap without ever touching UNI; buying UNI is a bet on the protocol's fee policy and governance, not a requirement to use it.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2020, about 6 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$380.8 million traded in the last 24 hours, 8.3% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeCaution624.7 million of 1.00 billion maximum coins are in circulation, so about 38% are still to be released. New coins entering the market can push the price down as they're sold.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 84% from its all-time high of $44.92 in May 2021. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context+16.6% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has held up better than bitcoin.
