What it is
Sui is a proof-of-stake blockchain launched in May 2023 by Mysten Labs, a company started by former engineers from Meta's Diem digital-currency project. It is built for apps that need speed and low fees, such as trading, games and payments. Sui treats each asset as a separate 'object', which lets many unrelated transactions be processed at the same time, and apps are written in a programming language called Move.
Around a hundred validators run the network, with influence weighted by how much SUI is staked to each one. SUI pays gas fees and is staked to secure the chain, and holders can delegate to a validator to earn rewards. The Sui Foundation funds the ecosystem and manages large token reserves, while Mysten Labs leads core development.
Maximum supply is 10 billion SUI. Only a minority was in circulation at launch, and coins have been unlocking ever since. Vesting for early investors and the core team largely wrapped up around May 2026, but more than half of all SUI still sits in community reserve and staking-subsidy pools managed by the Foundation, which release coins over time.
What can go wrong
- After Cetus, a major exchange on Sui, was hacked for about $220 million in May 2025, many validators refused to process transactions from the attacker's addresses, freezing about $162 million that was later returned through a vote. It helped victims, but it showed validators can block specific accounts.
- The Sui Foundation still manages most of the total supply, so its release decisions determine how many new coins reach the market.
- In November 2024 the network stopped producing blocks for nearly two hours because of a bug that crashed validators.
- Development and funding depend heavily on two closely linked organizations, Mysten Labs and the Sui Foundation.

Sui addresses start with '0x' like Ethereum's but are longer, and the two networks are not interchangeable. When withdrawing SUI from an exchange, choose the Sui network specifically.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2023, about 3 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$446.3 million traded in the last 24 hours, 11% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeRed flag4.12 billion of 10.00 billion maximum coins are in circulation, so about 59% are still to be released. A large share hasn't been released yet. Unlocks for insiders and early backers are a common reason prices fall.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 81% from its all-time high of $5.35 in January 2025. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−60.5% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
History of trouble and big events
- 2024: A transaction-scheduling bug halted the network for nearly two hours on November 21.
- 2025: Cetus lost about $220 million on May 22; validators froze most of it, and a governance vote later returned the frozen funds.
