What it is
Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a meme token launched in August 2020 by an anonymous creator as a self-described rival to Dogecoin. It is a token on Ethereum rather than a blockchain of its own. It built a large online community and a set of side projects, including a decentralized exchange, the tokens BONE and LEASH, and Shibarium, a separate network meant to make SHIB transactions cheaper.
Because SHIB lives on Ethereum, Ethereum's validators secure it, and moving it on the main chain costs Ethereum gas fees. Shibarium, launched in 2023, has its own validators and uses BONE to pay fees; part of those fees is used to buy and burn SHIB. Development is led by a mostly pseudonymous core team.
SHIB was created with a supply of 1 quadrillion tokens. Half was sent to Ethereum's co-founder, who in 2021 burned about 410 trillion of them and donated much of the rest to charity. About 41% of the original supply has now been burned, leaving roughly 589 trillion in circulation. No new SHIB is minted, and ongoing community burns remove only tiny fractions of the supply.
What can go wrong
- SHIB has no income or core use beyond its community and side projects, so its price rests almost entirely on attention and sentiment.
- In September 2025 an attacker forged data and temporarily staked a large amount of BONE to drain about $4 million from the Shibarium bridge, which was then shut down for weeks.
- A large share of supply sits in a small number of wallets, many of them exchanges, so moves by a few holders can swing the market.
- The enormous supply makes each token's price tiny, which can make SHIB look cheap; what matters is the total market value, which is already large.
- Shibarium stalled shortly after its August 2023 launch, and its activity has stayed modest since.

Copycat tokens using the SHIB name and logo exist on many networks. The real SHIB is an Ethereum token, so check the official contract address and expect Ethereum gas fees when moving it on the main chain.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2020, about 6 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityCaution$46.1 million traded in the last 24 hours, 1.5% of its market value. That's thin for its size: big holders selling could move the price more than you'd expect.
- Coins still to comeGood589.24 trillion of 589.50 trillion total coins are in circulation, so about 0% or less are still to be released. Little new supply is left to hit the market. There is no fixed maximum, so new coins can keep being created.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 94% from its all-time high of $0.0000862 in October 2021. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−49.7% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
History of trouble and big events
- 2021: Ethereum's co-founder burned about 410 trillion SHIB that had been sent to him.
- 2023: Shibarium launched in August but stalled soon after under heavy traffic.
- 2025: The Shibarium bridge lost about $4 million to an exploit on September 12.
