What it is
PEPE is a meme coin built around the Pepe the Frog internet meme, which has circulated online for nearly two decades. It launched in April 2023 as a token on Ethereum and climbed into the top tier of meme coins after major exchanges, including Binance, listed it.
There is no product, network or business behind PEPE. It does not pay for anything, earn fees or give holders votes on a protocol. The token itself openly presents as having no utility or roadmap. Its price is driven by attention, social media momentum and trading flows, which is the defining trait of the meme category.
The total supply is fixed at 420.69 trillion tokens, which is why each token trades at a tiny fraction of a cent. That huge supply makes the coin feel cheap, but the price per token says nothing about value; what matters is the total market value of all tokens. Large wallets, often called whales, hold a meaningful share and can swing the price when they move coins on or off exchanges.
What can go wrong
- In August 2023 three former team members took about 16 trillion PEPE (around $15 million) from the project's multisig wallet and sold it on exchanges, sending the price down sharply.
- With nothing producing value underneath, the price depends entirely on continued attention, and meme interest can move to newer coins quickly.
- Large holders can move markets; whale transfers on and off exchanges have repeatedly triggered big swings in both directions.
- Fake PEPE tokens and look-alike contracts are common; buying the wrong one on a decentralized exchange can mean buying something worthless.

A tiny price per token does not mean PEPE is cheap. Judge it by total market value, and treat it as pure speculation on attention.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2023, about 3 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$479.7 million traded in the last 24 hours, 25% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeGood420.69 trillion of 420.69 trillion maximum coins are in circulation, so about 0% or less are still to be released. Little new supply is left to hit the market.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 84% from its all-time high of $0.0000280 in December 2024. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−35.6% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
