What it is
Hedera is a public network for payments, tokens and smart contracts that opened to the public in 2019. Instead of a traditional blockchain, it uses a 'hashgraph', in which computers pass information to each other at random and agree on the order of transactions within a few seconds. HBAR pays fees, which are priced in U.S. dollar terms so they stay predictable, and is staked to help secure the network.
Hedera is overseen by the Hedera Council, a group of up to 39 large companies and institutions. Each member serves a limited term, runs a network node and votes on software upgrades and on how the treasury is used. The network has been gradually opening node operation to outside parties. In 2024 its full source code was handed to the Linux Foundation, where it is maintained as an open-source project called Hiero.
All 50 billion HBAR were created at launch, and no more can be made. A large share was held in a treasury controlled by the council, which releases coins over time to fund the network's development and growth.
What can go wrong
- Control rests with the council. A relatively small group of member organizations runs most nodes and decides on upgrades, so Hedera is far more permissioned than Bitcoin or Ethereum.
- The council-controlled treasury still holds a large amount of HBAR, and its releases add to the circulating supply.
- In March 2023 attackers exploited a flaw in Hedera's smart contract service to steal tokens from several decentralized exchange pools, and operators shut off public access to the network until a fix was in place.
- Well-known council members do not guarantee real usage; demand for HBAR depends on whether apps actually transact on the network.

Hedera accounts use short IDs like 0.0.123456 instead of long addresses, and many exchanges require a memo with deposits. Copy both exactly when sending HBAR.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2019, about 7 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$95.8 million traded in the last 24 hours, 2.6% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeGood44.03 billion of 50.00 billion maximum coins are in circulation, so about 12% are still to be released. Little new supply is left to hit the market.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 85% from its all-time high of $0.5692 in September 2021. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−52.4% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
History of trouble and big events
- 2019: The network opened to the public in September.
- 2023: A smart contract exploit in March led operators to cut off public access temporarily.
- 2024: Hedera's code was contributed to the Linux Foundation as the Hiero project in September.
