What it is
GateToken, or GT, is the house token of Gate, a crypto exchange founded in 2013 that renamed itself from Gate.io to Gate and moved to the gate.com address in 2025. Like other exchange tokens, GT gives holders benefits on the platform, such as lower trading fees, access to new token sales and launch events, and staking rewards.
GT is also the fee token for the exchange's own blockchains. GateChain launched in 2019, and in 2025 Gate added Gate Layer, a layer-2 network built with Optimism's tools, which uses GT to pay for transactions. In practice, most demand for GT still comes from people using the exchange.
Gate started with 300 million GT and has been buying back and burning tokens on a regular schedule. By January 2026 it reported about 184.8 million GT burned in total, roughly 62% of the original supply. The exchange holds licenses or registrations in several places, including a Dubai license obtained in 2025, but like most offshore exchanges it is not available everywhere, and its token is only as strong as the business behind it.
What can go wrong
- GT's value depends on one company. Trouble at Gate, such as a hack, legal action or a collapse in trading volume, would hit the token directly.
- Burn amounts are decided and reported by the exchange itself, so holders rely on its disclosures.
- Exchange tokens have failed badly before; FTT lost nearly all its value when FTX collapsed in 2022.
- Gate is restricted in some countries, and regulators in those places could limit access to the exchange or the token.

Think of GT as a bet on Gate the company; check whether you can legally use the exchange where you live before buying its token.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2019, about 7 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityRed flag$3.0 million traded in the last 24 hours, 0.3% of its market value. Very little of it trades each day. Prices on thin coins can drop hard when someone sells.
- Coins still to comeCaution104.7 million of 142.6 million maximum coins are in circulation, so about 27% are still to be released. New coins entering the market can push the price down as they're sold.
- Distance from its peakCautionDown 60% from its all-time high of $25.38 in January 2025. Many buyers from the peak are still underwater, and they often sell into any rally.
- Past yearFor context−36.4% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
- Tied to one companyCautionThis is Gate's own token. Its value depends on that company's business and decisions, and if the exchange runs into trouble the token usually falls first. FTX's token lost almost all its value within days when FTX collapsed in 2022.
History of trouble and big events
- April 2025: Gate's Dubai entity received a license from Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA).
- May 2025: Exchange rebranded from Gate.io to Gate and moved to gate.com.
- 2025: Gate Layer, an OP Stack layer-2 using GT for fees, launched.
