What it is
Filecoin is a network for renting out and buying data storage. Storage providers around the world offer disk space, and the network uses cryptographic proofs to check that they are actually keeping the files they promised to store. FIL is used to pay for storage, and providers must lock up FIL as collateral, which they can lose if they fail to keep data available.
The mainnet went live in October 2020. For its first few years the network focused on building up raw capacity, much of it filled with subsidized or low-value data. Since 2025 the stated focus has shifted to attracting customers who actually pay. Newer products such as Filecoin Onchain Cloud and S3-compatible storage services launched in 2026, but paid usage is still small; one ecosystem report put Filecoin Pay's annual run-rate at about $59,000 at the end of August 2026.
Supply is an important detail. Large token allocations to Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation finished vesting on October 15, 2026. That removes a major source of new FIL, though block rewards to storage providers continue.
What can go wrong
- Paid demand for storage is still very small compared with the size of the network, so much of the activity has been driven by token rewards rather than customers.
- Storage providers earn FIL and often sell it to cover hardware and power costs, which is steady selling pressure.
- Proposed changes to how block rewards are paid (such as FIP-0118) could alter the economics for providers and supply.
- Competes with cheap, mature cloud storage from Amazon, Google and others, as well as other decentralized storage projects.

Look past the network's total storage capacity and ask how much storage people are actually paying for; that number is the real test.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2020, about 6 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$112.0 million traded in the last 24 hours, 13% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeRed flag835.9 million of 1.96 billion total coins are in circulation, so about 57% are still to be released. A large share hasn't been released yet. Unlocks for insiders and early backers are a common reason prices fall. There is no fixed maximum, so new coins can keep being created.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 100% from its all-time high of $236.84 in April 2021. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−34.5% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
History of trouble and big events
- October 2020: Filecoin mainnet launched and FIL began trading.
- October 15, 2026: Vesting of the Protocol Labs and Filecoin Foundation allocations completed.
