What it is
Cosmos is a family of independent blockchains that can pass tokens and messages to each other using a shared standard called IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication). Dozens of chains are built with the Cosmos toolkit. The Cosmos Hub is one of those chains, and ATOM is its token.
This is the most important thing for a newcomer to understand: the wider Cosmos ecosystem can grow without the ATOM token benefiting much. Chains built with Cosmos software do not have to use ATOM or pay the Hub anything. ATOM's main jobs today are securing the Hub through staking and voting on Hub governance.
ATOM has no fixed maximum supply. New ATOM is created continuously and paid to stakers, so people who hold without staking see their share shrink over time. Governance has lowered the ceiling on that inflation (from 20% to 10% a year), and in late 2025 Cosmos Labs, working for the Interchain Foundation, started a research process to redesign ATOM's economics, aiming to tie the token more closely to network fees and usage. As of this writing that redesign is still a work in progress and any change would need an on-chain vote.
What can go wrong
- No supply cap: ongoing issuance dilutes anyone who does not stake.
- The value of the broader Cosmos ecosystem does not flow automatically to ATOM, and several earlier attempts to fix that, including 'ATOM 2.0' in 2022, were rejected or stalled.
- The pending tokenomics overhaul could change staking rewards and supply rules in ways that are not yet known.
- Staked ATOM takes about three weeks to unlock, so you cannot exit quickly during a sell-off.
- Some well-known chains have moved away from Cosmos software (for example, Sei's move to an EVM-only design), which weakens the ecosystem story.

If you hold ATOM, understand that staking is how you avoid dilution, and that unstaking has a waiting period of roughly three weeks.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2019, about 7 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$46.6 million traded in the last 24 hours, 5.0% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeGood537.2 million of 537.2 million total coins are in circulation, so about 0% or less are still to be released. Little new supply is left to hit the market. There is no fixed maximum, so new coins can keep being created.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 96% from its all-time high of $43.84 in September 2021. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−46.5% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
History of trouble and big events
- Late 2022: The 'ATOM 2.0' plan to overhaul the token was voted down by the community.
- November 2025: Cosmos Labs opened a formal research process to redesign ATOM's tokenomics.
