What it is
Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain that launched in 2017 with a focus on academic research and peer-reviewed design. ADA, its coin, pays transaction fees, is used for staking and gives holders a vote in how the network is run. Smart contracts arrived in 2021, and the network hosts lending, trading and stablecoin apps, though its app activity is smaller than Ethereum's or Solana's.
Cardano uses a proof-of-stake protocol called Ouroboros. Holders delegate ADA to stake pools run by independent operators; the coins never leave the holder's wallet, are not locked and cannot be lost through penalties. Development has been led by three organizations: Input Output, the Cardano Foundation and EMURGO. Since upgrades in late 2024 and early 2025, holders also vote through elected delegates, called DReps, on treasury spending and protocol changes, alongside a Constitutional Committee.
Supply is capped at 45 billion ADA. Coins not yet in circulation sit in a reserve, and a small slice is released every five-day period (an 'epoch') to pay staking rewards and fund a community treasury. As the reserve shrinks, new issuance slows down.
What can go wrong
- In November 2025 a deliberately malformed transaction exploited an old software bug and split the network into two competing chains for several hours. Exchanges paused deposits until node operators upgraded and the chains came back together.
- Treasury spending needs about two-thirds of participating delegate stake. In May 2026 a request to fund the Cardano Summit fell just short and the event was cancelled, showing that governance can stall plans.
- A few large organizations still hold significant influence over development, funding and votes.
- Real usage of Cardano apps is modest relative to the coin's market value, so the price leans heavily on expectations.

Staking ADA keeps the coins in your own wallet, and you can move them at any time. Any site that asks you to send ADA to it in order to 'stake' or 'double' it is a scam.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2017, about 9 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$263.8 million traded in the last 24 hours, 3.2% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeCaution37.56 billion of 45.00 billion maximum coins are in circulation, so about 17% are still to be released. New coins entering the market can push the price down as they're sold.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 93% from its all-time high of $3.09 in September 2021. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−66.5% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
History of trouble and big events
- 2021: The Alonzo upgrade added smart contracts in September.
- 2024-2025: The Chang and Plomin upgrades handed governance to ADA holders and their delegates.
- 2025: A malformed transaction split the chain on November 21; it reunified after node operators installed a patch.
- 2026: A treasury vote to fund the Cardano Summit failed narrowly in May, and the event was cancelled.
