What it is
Bittensor is a network that pays people in TAO for producing useful machine-learning work. It is split into many "subnets," each focused on one task, such as running AI models, providing computing power, storing data or detecting deepfakes. On each subnet, miners do the work and validators score it; the best-scoring participants earn the most new TAO. By late 2025 there were well over 100 active subnets.
In February 2025 an upgrade called dynamic TAO (dTAO) changed how rewards flow. Each subnet now has its own token, and people can stake TAO into a subnet to back it. Where TAO is staked helps decide which subnets get more of the daily emissions, so the market, rather than a small group of validators, steers rewards.
TAO's supply copies Bitcoin's shape: a maximum of 21 million tokens, with issuance cut in half at set points. The first halving took place in December 2025, cutting daily issuance from 7,200 to 3,600 TAO. The project is stewarded by the Opentensor Foundation, which still holds significant influence over upgrades.
What can go wrong
- Subnet tokens created under dTAO are often thin and volatile, and staking into a subnet ties your TAO to that subnet's fortunes.
- In July 2024 a malicious copy of Bittensor's software package stole about $8 million in TAO from users, and the foundation halted the chain to contain it, showing both a software-supply risk and how much control a small group still has.
- Whether subnets produce AI work that anyone outside the network pays for is still an open question; much activity is driven by emissions rather than outside customers.
- The network is technically complex, so newcomers can lose funds through mistakes with staking, wallets and subnet tokens.

Only install Bittensor wallets and tools from the official sources and check versions carefully; the 2024 theft came from a fake software package, not a hack of the chain itself.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2023, about 3 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$133.9 million traded in the last 24 hours, 4.3% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeRed flag11.3 million of 21.0 million maximum coins are in circulation, so about 46% are still to be released. A large share hasn't been released yet. Unlocks for insiders and early backers are a common reason prices fall.
- Distance from its peakCautionDown 64% from its all-time high of $757.60 in March 2024. Many buyers from the peak are still underwater, and they often sell into any rally.
- Past yearFor context−36.4% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
History of trouble and big events
- Jul 2024: A malicious Bittensor software package led to about $8 million in stolen TAO; the chain was halted temporarily.
- Feb 2025: Dynamic TAO launched, giving each subnet its own token.
- Dec 2025: First halving cut daily issuance from 7,200 to 3,600 TAO.
