What it is
BGB is the token of Bitget, a large centralized crypto exchange that, together with its Bitget Wallet app, claims about 120 million users. It launched in 2021 as a way to get discounts on trading fees, early access to new token sales on the exchange, and staking rewards.
The token's role expanded in September 2025, when Bitget made BGB the gas and governance token of Morph, an Ethereum layer-2 network. As part of that move, 440 million BGB went to the Morph Foundation: half was destroyed right away and the other half is being released at 2% a month for ecosystem use. Morph has said it will keep burning tokens in line with network activity, with a long-term goal of shrinking total supply to 100 million.
Even with those changes, BGB's value is tied mainly to how Bitget the exchange performs. Discounts and launchpad access are only worth something if people keep trading there. If trading on Bitget slows, the main reason to hold BGB weakens with it.
What can go wrong
- Value depends on a single private exchange whose finances and decisions holders cannot control.
- Exchange tokens can collapse if the exchange runs into regulatory or solvency trouble; FTX's FTT token is the classic example.
- Bitget is not licensed in every country, and regulatory action in major markets could cut its user base.
- Burn targets are goals set by the company and Morph, not guarantees, and 220 million BGB are still being released for ecosystem use.
- Morph is a young network; if it fails to attract users, BGB's added gas-token role adds little.

Before holding an exchange's token, check whether that exchange is licensed where you live, because the token's value rests on the exchange staying healthy.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2021, about 5 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityCaution$11.7 million traded in the last 24 hours, 0.9% of its market value. That's thin for its size: big holders selling could move the price more than you'd expect.
- Coins still to comeRed flag700.0 million of 2.00 billion maximum coins are in circulation, so about 65% are still to be released. A large share hasn't been released yet. Unlocks for insiders and early backers are a common reason prices fall.
- Distance from its peakCautionDown 77% from its all-time high of $8.45 in December 2024. Many buyers from the peak are still underwater, and they often sell into any rally.
- Past yearFor context−59% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
- Tied to one companyCautionThis is Bitget's own token. Its value depends on that company's business and decisions, and if the exchange runs into trouble the token usually falls first. FTX's token lost almost all its value within days when FTX collapsed in 2022.
History of trouble and big events
