What it is
BNB is the coin tied to Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange by trading volume. It began in 2017 as a token sold to fund the exchange's launch. Today it pays the fees on BNB Smart Chain, a network that runs smart contracts much like Ethereum, and holders also use it for trading-fee discounts and promotions on Binance.
BNB Smart Chain is secured by a fairly small set of validators, chosen by how much BNB is staked behind them. Blocks arrive every few seconds and fees are low, which made the chain popular for trading apps, games and meme tokens. Binance and developers connected to it drive most upgrades, and the chain's wallets, bridges and tools are closely linked to the exchange.
BNB started with a supply of 200 million coins. Every quarter, a formula-based 'auto-burn' permanently removes some BNB, and part of every gas fee paid on the chain is burned as well. The stated goal is to keep burning until only 100 million BNB remain. No new BNB is created through mining or staking rewards.
What can go wrong
- BNB's value and its network depend heavily on one company. Legal, financial or security trouble at Binance would hit BNB directly.
- In 2023 Binance pleaded guilty in the U.S. to anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations and agreed to pay about $4.3 billion; its founder also pleaded guilty and was later pardoned in October 2025. The SEC dropped its separate civil case in May 2025.
- The validator set is small compared with larger networks, making it easier for a few parties to coordinate. In October 2022 validators halted the chain after a bridge exploit.
- Because tokens are cheap and fast to launch on BNB Smart Chain, it is a common home for scam and rug-pull tokens that borrow familiar names.

When withdrawing BNB or tokens from an exchange, you will often see several network choices. Pick BNB Smart Chain (often labeled BEP-20) only if your wallet supports it, and keep a little BNB in that wallet to pay gas.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2017, about 9 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityCaution$684.8 million traded in the last 24 hours, 0.7% of its market value. That's thin for its size: big holders selling could move the price more than you'd expect.
- Coins still to comeCaution131.5 million of 200.0 million maximum coins are in circulation, so about 34% are still to be released. New coins entering the market can push the price down as they're sold.
- Distance from its peakGoodDown 46% from its all-time high of $1,370 in October 2025.
- Past yearFor context−32.7% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
- Tied to one companyCautionThis is Binance's own token. Its value depends on that company's business and decisions, and if the exchange runs into trouble the token usually falls first. FTX's token lost almost all its value within days when FTX collapsed in 2022.
- Contract powersGoodThis is the native coin of its own network, not a token issued by a smart contract, so there's no owner key that can mint, freeze or tax it. Changes to the rules go through the network's upgrade process.
History of trouble and big events
- 2022: An attacker exploited a bridge between Binance's chains in October and created about 2 million BNB, worth roughly $570 million; validators paused the chain, and most of it never left.
- 2023: Binance agreed to a roughly $4.3 billion settlement with U.S. authorities in November.
- 2025: The SEC dismissed its civil lawsuit against Binance in May.
