What it is
Arbitrum is a network that sits on top of Ethereum and handles transactions more cheaply and quickly than Ethereum itself. It works as a "rollup": it bundles many transactions together, processes them on its own, and then posts the results back to Ethereum, which acts as the final record. When people use Arbitrum, they usually pay fees in ETH, not ARB.
ARB is the governance token. Holders, or the delegates they hand their votes to, decide on proposals for the Arbitrum DAO, which controls a large treasury of ARB and votes on upgrades and spending programs. The token was handed out in an airdrop in March 2023 to early users of the network.
The supply is capped at 10 billion ARB. By 2026 more than half was in circulation, with about 92.6 million ARB from team and early-investor allocations still being released each month. That vesting schedule is set to finish around March 2027. In practical terms, ARB is a voting share in a busy piece of Ethereum infrastructure, but owning it does not give you a direct cut of the network's fee income.
What can go wrong
- Monthly unlocks of team and investor tokens keep adding new ARB to the market until about March 2027.
- Fees on Arbitrum are paid in ETH, so heavy network use does not automatically create demand for ARB.
- Governance is concentrated: a small number of large delegates and the foundation carry outsized weight in votes.
- Arbitrum competes with many other Ethereum layer-2 networks, including Base and the OP Stack chains, which pull users and apps away.
- Some parts of the system, such as the transaction sequencer, are still run by a single operator, which is a technical and trust dependency.

Using the Arbitrum network and owning the ARB token are two different things; you can use the network with ETH and never touch ARB.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2023, about 3 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$277.6 million traded in the last 24 hours, 21% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeCaution6.89 billion of 10.00 billion maximum coins are in circulation, so about 31% are still to be released. New coins entering the market can push the price down as they're sold.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 92% from its all-time high of $2.39 in January 2024. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−40.5% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
History of trouble and big events
- March 2023: ARB airdropped to early users and began trading.
- April 2023: Community backlash after it emerged the Arbitrum Foundation had already moved and sold some ARB before the DAO voted on its first large funding proposal; the foundation split the proposal up in response.
