What it is
Algorand is a standalone blockchain built for fast, low-cost payments and token transfers, with transactions typically settling in a few seconds and fees measured in fractions of a cent. It uses a proof-of-stake design, meaning the network is secured by people who hold and stake ALGO rather than by energy-heavy mining.
ALGO is used to pay transaction fees and to stake. Holders who run or back validators earn staking rewards; in May 2026 the Algorand Foundation reported about 2.1 billion ALGO staked, with the community holding most of that stake and the foundation holding a little under a fifth.
The maximum supply is 10 billion ALGO, and by mid-2026 close to 89% of it was already circulating, so the large early release of new tokens is mostly behind it. The project has long pitched itself to institutions and governments for things like tokenized assets and payment pilots. Its everyday user activity is modest compared with the largest chains: the foundation's own May 2026 report put total value locked in its apps at around $97 million.
What can go wrong
- Small app ecosystem: money locked in Algorand apps is a tiny fraction of what sits on Ethereum or Solana, so there is less real usage driving demand.
- Much of the project's direction and spending runs through the Algorand Foundation, which also holds a meaningful share of staked ALGO.
- Partnership and pilot announcements have historically outnumbered production deployments; announcements are not the same as sustained use.
- Staking rewards are paid in new ALGO, so holders who do not stake are slowly diluted.

When you see headlines about an Algorand partnership, check whether it is a live product with users or a pilot or memorandum of understanding.
Safety checks
- Track recordGoodTrading since 2019, about 7 years. It has been through at least one full market cycle.
- Trading activityGood$49.9 million traded in the last 24 hours, 4.9% of its market value. That's enough activity that a normal-size order shouldn't move the price.
- Coins still to comeGood9.07 billion of 10.00 billion maximum coins are in circulation, so about 9% are still to be released. Little new supply is left to hit the market.
- Distance from its peakRed flagDown 97% from its all-time high of $3.56 in June 2019. Most people who bought near the top have lost most of their money. A big drop doesn't make a coin cheap.
- Past yearFor context−39.7% over the past year, against −25.3% for bitcoin. It has done worse than simply holding bitcoin.
